A record number of influenza (flu) cases have been confirmed in Australia this year, and experts are urging people to get their routine flu vaccination without delay.
What is influenza?
Flu is a highly contagious infection of the airways. It affects people of all ages but is especially serious for babies, young children, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions. It can require hospitalisation and can cause death. Over 43,000 cases of the disease have already been confirmed this year, an increase of more than 50 per cent on the same period last year. Around 500 people died as a result of influenza last year.
Common flu symptoms include:
- A fever of 38C or higher
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Headache
- Body aches
- Fatigue
- Vomiting and diarrhoea.
