A message from our CEO - March 2025

The recent Tropical Cyclone Alfred was a difficult period for many people.

So many people were busy preparing things so they stayed safe; and at the same time some people were experiencing increased concerns based on their experience of natural disasters. That Tropical Cyclone Alfred hung around for so long before crossing the coastline just added to the anxiety.

The Flourish Australia team in Caboolture, right in the path of the cyclone, did a great job working with people we support in the local area. People told us that they particularly appreciated the regular contact they received; knowing that someone cared about how they were doing.

This was a great reminder that people often appreciate even the smallest gestures of care and support.  As Sheriden comments in her story this month “Just having someone empathetic to talk to helps my mental wellbeing”; or as Mark says in his story, “Teams are about trust and when you come to trust people it gives you a sense of hope that you will be successful in the future. This is because you know you can rely on people to be there for you- and they can rely on you, too.”

We all have the potential to be that person who checks in, or lends an ear, or provides encouragement; we don’t have to be mental health professionals.

In an ever complex and distressing world, focusing on the things that we can do locally to connect with each other, to listen to each other, and to lift each other up, is becoming increasingly important. These are very practical ways in which to support mental health and wellbeing, and by doing so build strong, inclusive communities.
