A study published in the open access journal BMJ Mental Health has found that people generally wake up feeling their happiest – and feel less happy later in the day.
As part of the study, nearly 50,000 people recorded their mental health and wellbeing across the day for two years. The data revealed people felt their best in the morning and worst around midnight. Mondays and Fridays were happier days than Sundays – something familiar to anyone who has suffered from the “Sunday scaries” – and moods were also better on a Tuesday.
Seasonal mood changes
There were clear indications that seasons also influenced moods.
Mental health was best in the summer across all indicators, while in winter, people recorded worse levels of loneliness, and depressive and anxiety symptoms.
The colder months were also associated with less happiness, life satisfaction and feeling that life was worthwhile.
Tips to Make the Most of 'Better' Times:
- Start Your Day Right: Since mornings are when people feel their best, try to schedule important tasks and activities during this time to maximize productivity and enjoyment.
- Embrace Mondays and Fridays: Use the natural boost in mood on these days to tackle challenging projects or engage in social activities.
- Plan for Sundays: Combat the "Sunday scaries" by planning relaxing or enjoyable activities to look forward to, making the transition to the new week smoother.
- Leverage Seasonal Benefits: Take advantage of the summer months by spending more time outdoors and engaging in activities that boost your mood. In winter, focus on self-care and maintaining social connections to mitigate feelings of loneliness and anxiety.
- Mind Your Mental Health: Be aware of how your mood changes throughout the day and week, and seek support if you notice persistent low moods, especially during the colder months.
