EVEN the boss can get depression. Or the man running the state. That’s one of the messages NSW Opposition leader and mental health advocate John Brogden at a breakfast for workplaces at Sydney Olympic Park on Tuesday.
The breakfast follows Australian Bureau of Statistics which show 3128 Australians died by suicide last year — a 9.1 per cent increase since 2016.
The national suicide rate increased to 12.6, which is the second highest rate in 10 years after 2015 (12.7 per cent).
“Our suicides going up so we’re going backwards which is heartbreaking,’’ Mr Brogden said.
It’s why Mr Brogden, now the chairman of Lifeline and Landcom CEO, wants targets to be set in an effort to reduce the national suicide rate by 25 per cent over five years.
