Human Rights Day 2024

Tuesday 10 December is Human Rights Day, commemorating the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Drafted by representatives with different legal and cultural backgrounds from all regions of the world, this  landmark document set out, for the first time, fundamental human rights to be universally protected. These are the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being – regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now

Human Rights Day 2024 focuses on how human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said, “Human rights are the foundation for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.”

This year’s theme, Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now, is a call to acknowledge the importance and relevance of human rights in our everyday lives. We have an opportunity to change perceptions by speaking up against hate speech, correcting misinformation and countering disinformation. This is the time to mobilise action to reinvigorate a global movement for human rights.

What are human rights?

Human rights acknowledge the intrinsic worth of every individual, regardless of their background, where they live, their appearance, beliefs, or perspectives.

They are based on principles of dignity, equality and mutual respect, which are shared across cultures, religions and philosophies. They are about being treated fairly, treating others fairly and having the ability to make genuine choices in our daily lives.

Respect for human rights is the cornerstone of strong communities in which everyone can make a contribution and feel included.

Flourish’s commitment to human rights

Flourish Australia upholds the fundamental human rights of all people. Our commitment to this is evident in our recovery-focused, person-led support. We value lived experience and more than half of the team at Flourish have had a lived experience of a mental health issue. Every day we support thousands of Australians to grow, learn, and exercise fully their capacity to live their lives – as is their human right.

Our work on human rights

Flourish Australia was the platinum sponsor of the 2023 Mental Health Services (TheMHS) Conference. This event brought leading practitioners, researchers and experts from Australia and New Zealand together to explore ways to ensure human rights are at the forefront of mental health access, services and treatment.

Flourish Australia team members, including people accessing supports, presented a number of papers at the conference, including about how to ensure the voices of people with lived experience were at the forefront of mental health research.
