Celebrating International Women’s Day 2025

International Women's Day on March 8 is an opportunity to come together with friends, family and colleagues to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, all around the world.

For 2025, the theme is “Accelerate Action”. This theme emphasises the importance of taking swift and decisive steps to achieve gender equality. It calls for increased momentum and urgency in addressing the systemic barriers and biases that women face, both in personal and professional spheres.

At the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, which is roughly five generations from now, to reach full gender parity, data from the World Economic Forum shows.

Significant barriers to gender equality remain, yet with the right action and support, positive progress can be made for women everywhere. Accelerate Action is a worldwide call to acknowledge strategies, resources, and activity that positively impact women's advancement, and to support and elevate their implementation.

Inspiration from Rosie Batty

To mark International Women's Day, Flourish Australia held a special webinar and Q&A session with Rosie Batty AO. Rosie is a family violence campaigner and the 2015 Australian of the Year. She became a leading voice against family violence after her former partner murdered their 11-year-old son, Luke. His death and Rosie’s advocacy were instrumental in the establishment of the Royal Commission into Family Violence in Victoria. It was sobering – yet incredibly inspiring – to hear from Rosie how she channelled her grief into a crusade against domestic violence.

How to show your support

1. Participate in local events: Attend or volunteer at International Women's Day events in your community.
2. Advocate for gender equality: Use your voice on social media to raise awareness about gender equality issues.
3. Educate yourself and others: Read books, watch documentaries, and engage in conversations about women's rights and gender equality.

This International Women’s Day, you can make a direct impact by donating to Flourish Australia’s Women and Children's Program. Your support helps mothers facing mental health challenges, homelessness, and the risk of losing their children, ensuring no call for help goes unanswered. Together, we can create a brighter future for women and children in need.
