The flu and you

The flu can hit you like a freight train. Suddenly, you feel like you’ve been body slammed by exhaustion, muscle aches, and chills. While many people recover within a week or so, it can cause severe illness and land you in hospital.

About 270 people died from the flu in Australia last year. Getting vaccinated each year is the best way to protect yourself and others from severe symptoms.

Common flu symptoms include:

●      A fever of 38C or higher

●      Cough

●      Sore throat

●      Runny nose

●      Headache

●      Body aches

●      Fatigue

●      Vomiting and diarrhoea

Everyone aged six months and older should get vaccinated. The flu vaccine is free for people most at risk of severe illness, including:

●      Children under the age of five

●      People 65 and older

●      Pregnant women

●      Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

●      People who are immunocompromised or with other medical conditions such as cardiac disease, chronic respiratory or neurological conditions, metabolic disorder and kidney disease
