Each year, more than 3000 people die by suicide in Australia. That equates to an average of nine people per day. Each one of these deaths is preventable and that’s why Flourish Australia is supporting World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, September 10.
The theme is “creating hope through action” to raise awareness of and reduce stigma around suicide. In 2021, it was the 15th leading cause of death in Australia and the leading cause of deaths for people aged between 15 and 24. Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. World Suicide Prevention Day aims to build awareness about suicide and at home, in schools and workplaces.
If you are worried about someone, it is important to reach out. Asking someone if they are suicidal will not increase risk or ‘put ideas’ in their head. Instead, let them know it is OK to talk it through without judgement, and that there is always hope and help available. Talking about suicide is vital to prevention.
Flourish Australia is committed to preventing suicide and Applied Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST) is available to all staff. For more information, contact Flourish Australia on 1300 779 270 or here.
