Governor-General to visit leading mental health program for women and children

Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General will visit Flourish Australia’s leading Women’s and Children Program in western Sydney.

The Governor-General  will meet participants in the program and tour the facilities from midday on Thursday November 21.

“It’s an incredible honour to welcome Governor-General Mostyn to see firsthand some of the work we’re doing supporting mothers experiencing mental health issues and their young children,” Flourish Australia Chair Professor Elizabeth More AM said.

“Mothers and children entering the Flourish Australia Women and Children's Program are often homeless, with mothers struggling with their mental health and a complex service system, and the potential of having their children taken into care.

“Many have experienced domestic violence, addiction, and associated trauma, and our program provides intensive residential support, including 24/7 mental health support, parenting,

and life-skills guidance.

“Remarkably, the program has helped 900 at-risk mothers and their children, with over 90% maintaining safe homes with their children two years after completion of their time with Flourish Australia.

"But extra resources are desperately needed. For every mother we accept, we turn away six because we simply don't have capacity to meet rising demand.

“Given her Excellency’s strong background in gender equality and business, we’re extremely proud to share our work in this space. For every child that does not go into care, aside from the potential personal and social benefits, the community saves about $500,000.

“Flourish Australia would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the Governor-General for the opportunity to showcase this program.”
