April 25 represents one of Australia’s most important national occasions as both Australia and New Zealand mark ANZAC Day.
ANZAC Day is a day not to celebrate conflict but to remember the sacrifices made during war for our nation.
While the day officially marks the landing of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli in 1915 and the ‘ANZAC tradition’ of ideals of courage, endurance, and mateship, it has also become a broader day of commemoration of Australia and New Zealand’s service men and woman and their contributions to the society we live in.
The day will start early for most around the country with dawn services. These are opportunities for quiet reflections and to pay respects for the Australian women and men who did not return home from war and those who did, but with their lives forever changed.
Each year in Canberra, the Australian War Memorial hosts the Anzac Day Dawn Service with support from the Returned and Services League of Australia ACT.
If you are unable to get to a dawn service but would still like to commentate from home, The Sydney Dawn Service will be broadcast live on ABC TV, ABC NEWS channel, ABC iview and on the ABC listen app from 4.20am (AEST), followed by the Canberra Dawn Service at 5:30 am.
There will also be coverage of local marches which take place later in the morning. For more information head to https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-04-08/anzac-day-2024-on-the-abc/103668062
ANZAC Day can be difficult for many, so please remember to take time to reach out to people who may be experiencing distress or sadness. At this time some people may want more support.
