Helen - The journey from Art School to exhibiting in galleries

Wherever I’m at in my life, I know I’ll always create art! I never imagined I’d be exhibiting in galleries just a few years after studying at Art School but here I am.

Art is a way for many people to navigate challenging times and I’m a strong advocate for the role of creativity in nurturing mental wellbeing.

I was delighted to submit two screen prints and a lino print to the 2024 Newcastle Show Art Competition and Exhibition and they were hung alongside the work of other local artists. There were cash prizes up to $1500 with many different Award categories such as sculptures, paintings, drawing, mixed media, lino prints, landscapes, jewellery and Indigenous art.

The year before, I had my own exhibition space at Maitland Regional Art Gallery with a collection of 30 ‘Where the Seeds Grow’ works, exploring the idea that we’re never far from our ancestral past. With the encouragement of Flourish Australia, I had applied to the gallery for this opportunity a couple of years prior, and set about developing a body of work in my determination to make it happen.

The support of the Flourish Australia team in Newcastle has been the backbone of not only my mental health recovery but also my art career! Without them, I would be lost and likely sitting around looking at my walls. They’ve been with me every step of the way to finding my passion and going after my artistic goals, which gives me the assurance that I have what it takes to make want I want happen for myself.

Life is a bit like a ball of string, you can let it keep rolling out forever, it’s up to you how far you take it!

My mental wellbeing is nurtured daily by my creativity and I’m well on my way to achieving my dream of one day exhibiting at a Sydney gallery and earning a residency at the Lighthouse Gallery where I can be surrounded by art everyday.
