Psychosocial recovery coaches are a new form of support now available under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The role of a psychosocial recovery coach is to support people with psychosocial disabilities on their recovery journey, so they can take more control over their lives, better manage the complex challenges of daily living, and ultimately live a more purposeful and meaningful life.
Recovery coaches are workers funded by the NDIS who have specialised mental health knowledge. At Flourish Australia, more than 56% of staff have lived experience.
Who is eligible?
The NDIS funds psychosocial recovery coaching for people who have a primary psychosocial disability recognised under the NDIS scheme.
The NDIS assesses each person on a case-by case basis to see whether they are eligible.
What is involved?
Flourish’s psychosocial recovery coaches will:
- spend time with you to understand your unique needs
- help you receive tailored support from available services that suit your needs
- help you engage in community activities that are focused on your recovery journey
- provide information and support to help you make choices about the service you receive
- help you address barriers you may be experiencing
- assist with problem solving and developing resilience
- help you unpack your recovery goals and take active steps towards achieving them
- help you better understand the NDIS and support you with the NDIS application
- help you to understand your NDIS plan.
What to look for in a psychosocial recovery coach
When choosing a psychosocial recovery coach, you should consider their qualifications, lived experience, training and skills. Ask if they are registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, and check that they are available to support you when and where you need them. You should also look for a recovery coach who you get along well with and who is a good listener.
