Governor-General Sam Mostyn AC visits Flourish Australia’s Women’s and Children Program in Western Sydney

Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General has praised the work of Flourish Australia's Women's and Children Program during an official visit.

The program supports mothers experiencing mental health issues with children in their care, and are often homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Her Excellency met with some of the program's participants and toured the facility on Thursday November 21.

Flourish Australia Chair Professor Elizabeth More AM welcomed the delegation to the facility.

Her Excellency said the visit aligned with the core tenets of her approach to the role – care, kindness and respect.

"This facility and program in the last 15 years is dealing with a very modern approach to a problem that has probably always existed but we now understand and we provide the relief for those women and children," she said.

The program has helped 900 at-risk mothers and their children, with over 90% maintaining safe homes two years after completion

Her Excellency noted the high return on investment the program provides, while also pointing out there were enormous benefits to participants.

"Of course what you're avoiding is a separation of mothers from their children and families staying together," she said.

"You're dealing with the mental health challenges that many of those women have."

Her Excellency also acknowledged the program's important work with First Nations women and children.

She said her role involved sharing the stories from programs like Flourish Australia's Women's and Children Program with the Prime Minister and senior decision-makers.

Flourish Australia expressed its sincere gratitude to the Governor-General for visiting the program.
